Time: 5 minutes to select and crop references.

Use reference images to communicate identity, clothing, pose, prop, environment, or visual direction. More references are not always better.

Choose strong references

  • Use a sharp image with the subject large enough to inspect.
  • Prefer neutral lighting and limited occlusion for identity references.
  • Show defining clothing or accessories when they must remain consistent.
  • Use a separate image for a prop or environment when it would confuse character identity.
  • Crop unrelated people and private background information.

Give each reference one job

Label the purpose in the prompt when the tool supports multiple references:

  • Reference 1: face and hair identity.
  • Reference 2: clothing and color palette.
  • Reference 3: environment or composition.

Avoid combining several contradictory art styles, ages, outfits, or camera views without explaining which parts should be preserved.

Reference count and format

The model and uploader determine how many references are accepted. Follow the current control. If a tool accepts fewer files than expected, keep the most important identity reference and remove redundant images.

Rights and privacy

Use only material you are permitted to upload and transform. Remove unnecessary personal information. A reference can guide a result, but it does not guarantee exact identity, style, pose, or composition.
